WINTER'S FRAGRANCE -- CRABAPPLE AT DUSK
48 X 48 inches, Lascaux acrylic on linen mounted on panel
November 2002

Since 1987, I have been absorbed with painting the Missouri River Valley, at various times of the day and during different atmospheric conditions.  The red crabapples on this RED JADE tree backlit by the setting sun had been beckoning to me for some time.  Painting a scene through a screen of foliage is one of the most difficult landscape paintings to create.  The added challenge of racing the winter sunset added great vitality to this piece.  When viewed in half-light the piece is very naturalistic.  Up-close it is a frenetic web of muscular paint.
