I did a series of sky studies in Tonalist palettes last fall/winter, I love this especially moody one. Sometimes the sun appears white in the sky at sunset, due to cloud cover. I like the ambiguity of this piece, it could either be the moon or the sun. Painted on a very windy day, one of my palettes and a tray stand blew over the bluff as I worked. I only had about thirty minutes of daylight left and I watched in dismay as my palette tumbled down the eighty foot sea cliff. Since I always work from two palettes (one for the sky and water hues and one for the landscape colors) I was able to finish the painting and retrieve my palette from the beach afterwards.
