Sea Caves—Cape Flattery

Cape Flattery is an otherworldly place to visit and an incredible motif for paintings. These large sea caves are at the tip of the Penninsula that is the westernmost point in the continental United States.  On this late spring day they created moody, deep emerald vaults in the glittering teal and turquoise sea. For most of my career I have been a painter of twilight and moody, overcast days. Paintings depicting glittering sunlight are relatively rare in my oeuvre. This piece captures the sparkling quality of a late spring day in the Pacific Northwest with saturated colors and expressive brushwork.
